[Travelogue] The Most Beautiful Sanctuary of Pudacuo National Park (2)
2025-06-12
Arriving at the first scenic spot, Shudu Lake, tourists actually have two choices: either get off the bus and take a look at the viewing platform by the lake and then turn back to get on the bus, or walk 2.7 kilometers along the wooden boardwalk to the next station to board the bus. Naturally, the DouDou family chose to walk. Originally, there was only one sightseeing bus every ten minutes or so, each bringing only thirty to forty tourists. Most of them returned to the station where they got off, so after walking only two to three hundred meters along the boardwalk, you could hardly feel the presence of others, as if you already owned everything in front of you.

■ Wildflowers drooping by the Shudu Lake, like graceful and shy girls ■
These wooden boardwalks sometimes pass through the woods, sometimes climb up the hillsides, and sometimes cross the water surface, inevitably being somewhat hidden, allowing you to only see a small section in front of you. DouDou's favorite is the winding boardwalks that are laid flat on the grass, where you can see over a kilometer away at a glance, becoming thinner and thinner as the distance increases, until they are completely submerged in the green grass. Such a road seems to lead people to a magical unknown world, just like the wonderland experienced by Alice.

■ Several small white mushrooms are hidden in the grass, with spotless white caps ■
On both sides of the boardwalk are easily accessible small flowers. Besides the ubiquitous yellow flowers, a kind of purple flower is particularly eye-catching. The silvery, metallic-lustered stems stretch straight up from the middle of the grass, reaching a height of several tens of centimeters above the ground, without a single green leaf visible. Originally flamboyantly rising above the ground, a cluster of purple flowers at the top of the stem droops its head, with about ten or so flowers, as if graceful girls become shy under people's gaze.

■ Chipmunks dart back and forth warily on the road ahead from time to time ■
Several small white mushrooms are hidden in the grass, with spotless white caps. Chipmunks dart back and forth warily on the road ahead from time to time. They are not close to people, but they are not very afraid of people either. As long as a certain distance is maintained, they will stop and curiously size up these seemingly friendly visitors. Although it is the height of summer, there is no summer in Pudacuo. Here, the altitude is 3500 meters to 4000 meters, and even in July and August, it is called "late spring." Late spring is the most comfortable season in Pudacuo, with daytime highs around 25 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures in the teens. For these small lives, it is also important to seize the time to enjoy the most pleasant time of the year.

■ On many trees, the Usnea even covers most of the leaves ■
Walking deep into the boardwalk by the lake, one can't help but feel that the scenery here has many similarities with Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan, and in some places, it is even better. The first is the Usnea hanging from the trees like beards. Usnea can also be seen everywhere in the primeval forests of Huanglong, but compared with Pudacuo, the Usnea in Huanglong can only be regarded as sparse, while the Usnea in Pudacuo is dense. On many trees, the Usnea even covers most of the leaves, turning a originally green tree crown into white hair. (To be continued)

■ Meadow "floating" on the water surface ■

■ Some trees fall, often uprooted ■
The fallen trees on the hillsides and by the water, which can be seen everywhere, also have something in common with Jiuzhaigou. The difference is that in Jiuzhaigou, many tree trunks are half-submerged in the clear water, and over time, new grass and small trees grow on them. In Pudacuo, most of the fallen trees are still on the hillsides. Although some of the trees near the water have died, they are still standing upright in the water. Even if some have fallen, they are often uprooted. This situation, where the entire root system is completely propped up on the water surface, is rarely seen in Jiuzhaigou.
Looking at the tree trunks floating on the water, DouDou suddenly thought that most of the tree trunks in Jiuzhaigou are suspended in the water or sunk to the bottom, which seems to be inconsistent with our common sense that wood can float on the water. Perhaps the water in Jiuzhaigou has a high calcium content, and the tree trunks soaked in the water are slowly calcified before sinking. It is said that there is a kind of tree in Changbai Mountain that has a particularly high density and will sink immediately when it falls into the water. Perhaps the trees in Jiuzhaigou are also denser than those in Pudacuo.

■ Mili Tang is a well-known pasture in Shangri-La ■
The next stop from Shudu Lake is called "Mili Tang", which means "Buddha's Eye Meadow" in Tibetan. According to legend, it is the Buddha's eye in the world, which can see through the world and eliminate obstacles to knowledge. For tourists, this is a typical subalpine meadow surrounded by mountains. For local herders, it is a well-known pasture in Shangri-La. Because two kinds of grass grow in it, one is called "Zumuyasha" and the other is called "De Guide Duo", which are rich in protein and fat. After eating them, yaks become strong and produce a large amount of milk, providing excellent butter and cheese.

■ The lake here is not an ordinary lake, but a sacred lake on the plateau ■
